Problem/ Context

In rural areas around Hargeisa, many children from low-income families face significant barriers to accessing quality education due to the lack of schools, long distances to existing educational facilities, and limited financial resources. As a result, many children are unable to attend school or continue their education. Girls and vulnerable children are particularly affected by these challenges. This project aims to address these problems by building a school that provides accessible, safe, and affordable quality education for children from disadvantaged families. The school will help improve literacy, create equal educational opportunities, and contribute to the long-term development of the local community.

Detailed project description

My project aims to improve the existing school facilities and provide a better learning environment for students.

The proposed project includes the following:

  • Renovation of Existing Schools: Repairing and improving the existing school buildings to provide a safer and more suitable learning environment for students.
  • Construction of Three New Classrooms: Building three additional classrooms to accommodate more students and help address the shortage of classroom space.
  • Improvement of Learning Facilities: Ensuring that the schools have better facilities to support students and their educational needs.

After assessing the needs of the schools and considering the estimated construction costs in my local area, I estimate that the total budget required for this project is approximately US$10,000.

This project aims to build a school in a rural area near Hargeisa, Somaliland, to provide accessible and quality education for children from low-income and disadvantaged families. Many children in rural communities face difficulties accessing education due to the lack of nearby schools, long distances, poverty, and limited educational resources. This project seeks to address these challenges by establishing a safe, inclusive, and child-friendly learning environment. The project will involve constructing school classrooms, providing basic furniture and learning materials, and creating a suitable environment for teaching and learning. The school will aim to serve children who currently have limited access to formal education, with particular attention to vulnerable children and girls.

The project will also seek to recruit qualified teachers and work with parents, community leaders, and local education authorities to support school management and encourage children's enrolment and attendance. The main objectives are to increase access to education, reduce educational inequality, improve literacy and numeracy, and create better opportunities for children from disadvantaged backgrounds.Through this initiative, the project hopes to contribute to the long-term educational and social development of rural communities around Hargeisa. The school will promote equal educational opportunities and help children build a brighter future.

For the past three years, we have been renting a room and space to house our preschool.
We started with 40 students and now have 80. We serve students in the younger, middle, and older preschool classes, as well as a special education class designed to support children who left public school at a very young age, as well as those facing learning challenges, to help them overcome them.
With our limited resources, we are struggling not only to build our own school but also to accommodate more students.

The school’s two buildings are unfinished and dilapidated; they have 4 and 2 classrooms, respectively, for a total enrollment of 357 students. There are more than 65 students per class. The desks and benches are broken and insufficient. Three or more students sit on each bench instead of two.

ESTABLISHED in 2000. I have been running this school for three years now. But there are no amenities for these students. Under the previous principal, enrollment was at a maximum of 90 students. When I arrived, after giving the school a few coats of paint, I had 120 students in the first year, then 180, and 187 this year.
