Construction of New Classrooms - St Jean Bosco

Sénégal
|
Toubab Dialaw

Problem/ Context

The school originally planned (32 classrooms) was not fully completed due to a lack of funding. The current capacity (6 classrooms) is insufficient to meet the needs of the village and the surrounding areas.

Detailed project description

St. Jean Bosco Elementary School is a private school founded in 2018 by Brother Nathanael Tabla, a member of the St. Jean Catholic community. It was established to make education more accessible to the village’s children by offering low tuition (between €15 and €30 per month). It is located in Toubab Dialaw, a village on the Petite Côte south of Dakar, Senegal.

  • The classrooms are unfinished; only the left wing has been built (see photos).
  • The current facility cannot accommodate the expected number of students in the Toubab Dialaw area. Some students travel long distances to Yenne High School.
  • There is no water fountain; 30-liter water jugs are brought to the school every day.
  • There is no cafeteria, no infirmary, and no first-aid kit on the school grounds.

The project to create the SAINT JEAN-BOSCO school complex comes at just the right time. This new school complex will help address certain challenges facing the municipality’s education system.

Vision: To build an environment where every child can envision success. A modern school will be made available to the school-age population in the area, along with local transportation options.

The CRS school, founded in 1995, serves students from disadvantaged backgrounds. As a result, it faces many challenges that affect academic performance. In addition, the poor condition of the restrooms makes the children feel uncomfortable. Consequently, they relieve themselves outside the school.

For the past three years, we have been renting a room and space to house our preschool.
We started with 40 students and now have 80. We serve students in the younger, middle, and older preschool classes, as well as a special education class designed to support children who left public school at a very young age, as well as those facing learning challenges, to help them overcome them.
With our limited resources, we are struggling not only to build our own school but also to accommodate more students.

The school’s two buildings are unfinished and dilapidated; they have 4 and 2 classrooms, respectively, for a total enrollment of 357 students. There are more than 65 students per class. The desks and benches are broken and insufficient. Three or more students sit on each bench instead of two.
