CONTEXT

The FOLOGO II Public Elementary School is located in the Frefredou Sud neighborhood, in the downtown area of the municipality of Bonon, a town in the central-western part of Côte d’Ivoire.

PROBLEM
The school’s two buildings are unfinished; they contain 4 and 2 classrooms, respectively, for a total enrollment of 357 students.

CURRENT SITUATION

  • The classrooms are unfinished, and the roof is damaged and leaks rainwater (see photos).
  • There are more than 65 students per class. The classrooms, designed to accommodate an average of 40 students, are overcrowded, and the school also turned away students at the start of the school year due to lack of space.
  • The desks and benches are broken and insufficient. Three or more students are sitting on a single bench instead of two.
  • There is no water fountain; the children are forced to walk farther to fetch water from wells.
  • There is no cafeteria, no infirmary, and no first-aid kit on school grounds.

Given that the two school buildings remain unfinished, there is a shortage of desks and chairs, and there are no restrooms, school cafeterias, or infirmaries, the Action for Africa association has added the completion of the FOLOGO II Public Elementary School in the city of Bonon to its projects.

OVERALL OBJECTIVES

The main objective is to improve students’ learning and living conditions:

  • Ensure access to a quality basic education: For all children, regardless of their social or geographic background, by ensuring that every student benefits from appropriate learning conditions.

SPECIFIC OBJECTIVES

Other objectives the project aims to achieve:

  • Promote and improve access to education
  • Reduce absenteeism and dropout rates
  • Increase student success rates

KEY INITIATIVES

Action For Africa will undertake the following initiatives:

  • Completing the two unfinished buildings—one with four classrooms and the other with two—will further inspire and motivate teachers to share their knowledge and enable students to learn in optimal conditions.
  • The purchase of 240 new desks and chairs will help reduce the shortage of desks and chairs in classrooms, thereby giving students the opportunity to sit in pairs during lessons.
  • The distribution of 30 school kits and uniforms will achieve two goals. First, it will motivate students. Second, it will eliminate financial barriers to attending school.
  • The payment of 20 tuition fees and financial aid for students from disadvantaged backgrounds, to encourage them to continue their education.

By getting involved in this initiative, you have the opportunity to change the lives of many children. Whether you choose to make a donation, share our cause, or volunteer, every action counts. Together, we can offer the children at Epp Fologo 2 School a better future through a quality education. Join Action For Africa today and help build these new classrooms that will open up new learning opportunities for the children in the community.

Providing children in rural villages with access to school is one of the most important steps toward reducing global poverty. It offers an opportunity to out-of-school children in these areas, as well as to future generations. The goals of this initiative are the well-being of students and a better environment for learning, studying, and succeeding.
